On September 27, 1998, a revolution was born. A revolution that would change the face of the internet forever. That revolution was none other than Google; today we celebrate its 25th birthday.

Before it became the ubiquitous search engine we all know and love, Google was known as BackRub. Yes, you read that right, BackRub. This was the initial name given to the search engine by its creators, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who were then students at Stanford University. The name ‘BackRub’ was chosen because the program analysed the web’s “back links”.

The name Google, on the other hand, came from a mathematical term ‘googolplex’, suggested by a Stanford graduate student, Sean Anderson. It turned out to be a smart move, considering the name BackRub didn’t quite have the same ring to it. The name Google is a play on the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, reflecting the company’s mission to organise the vast amount of information available on the web.

The Transformation of the World’s Leading Search Engine

Over the years, Google has grown exponentially. What started as an ambitious project in a university dorm room has now become a multi-billion-dollar corporation with its own sprawling Googleplex campus. The BackRub search engine from the 90s is now regarded as the predecessor of the Google search engine.

Google has come a long way since its BackRub days. Today, it processes over 5 billion searches per day and holds 92% of the global search engine market share. Not only that, but it also provides a host of other services such as Gmail, Google Docs, and YouTube, to name just a few.

Google Search Engine

The way we use Google has also evolved over time. In the past, we used it mainly to look up information, now you can enlist the help of SEO agencies to boost your business’s online visibility and use the power of search engine optimisation as well as pay-per-click marketing to boost the growth of your business. Alongside this, Google is much more than just a search engine. It’s a map navigator, a news aggregator, an email service, a video platform, and so much more. It has become an integral part of our daily lives.

As we celebrate Google’s 25th birthday, we can’t help but marvel at its incredible journey. From a simple search engine called BackRub to a global tech giant, Google has truly transformed the digital landscape.

Here’s to another 25 years of innovation! 🥳🎈
